10 Style Tips for Moms on the Go - Kathrine Eldridge, Wardrobe Stylist

This Friday I will be doing a presentation on style for a mom’s group.  I thought now would be the perfect time to give my take on how to dress stylishly, comfortably, and within a reasonable budget while you’re running around chasing after little ones (or even big ones).  I have been there since I have two sons of my own. You don’t have to sacrifice style when it comes to a busy lifestyle. When entering the parenting years, fashion can take a back seat. Here are some tips that can help you modernize and streamline your look while being the best mom you can be. Your confidence will return with these easy to follow suggestions. Are you ready to get your mojo back?

1. Get yourself a stylish coat.  This is what most people will see when you are running around in the cold and snow so make it good one. If you are in the Midwest like I am, you can never have enough coats.

2. Make sure to add some chic accessories to that coat.  A hat like the one above is my number one recommendation. Everyone likes a good hat. (I get compliments on this one all the time!) Just get over your fear of hats and go for it! Don’t tell me that you don’t look good in hats. You just have to find the right one for your face. (Your hubby will thank me for this!)

3. You need a good pair of booties. I see a lot of moms that only wear knee boots. Those are fine but sometimes adding a bootie will modernize your look. I also love the versatility of booties because you can also wear them with skirts and dresses besides jeans and leggings. They also move nicely into spring especially if you get a neutral tan or beige color. There’s a pair for everyone out there!

4. Throw on chic layering pieces to wear over basic tanks and t-shirts. Long drapey cardigans (no twinsets please!), vests, and blazers easily take your look up a notch. Just add them over your basic tops and you can be out the door.

5. Never underestimate the power of a leather jacket.  You can throw this over almost anything and you instantly look cooler.  You don’t have to invest a lot of money in one if you go with faux leather. Every mom needs a little edge. I recommend this one here because it’s faux leather, washable, and on sale right now!

6. Add some cute flats or sneakers into your shoe collection. Besides a good pair of booties which I mentioned earlier, sneakers and flats are another way to add polish and comfort. Athleisure wear is a huge trend right now that all moms should take advantage of. Just make sure you aren’t doing that look every single day. Yoga pants are great but variety is the spice of life!

7. Add a long pendant necklace or scarf to the mix. Accessories like these make the eye move down which in turn flatters your figure. They also add effortless polish to any look. The tunic/leggings-skinny jeans combo is my favorite silhouette for moms on the go.  Necklaces and scarves instantly change this staple look into something special.

8. Tote around all your mom necessities in a classic leather bag. This might cost you more money up front but this accessory should stand the test of time.

9. Invest in blouses and tops that can transition from day to night. Tops that are made with rayon, polyester, and jersey fabrics will show less wear and tear.  Wear them during the day with jeans but then dress them up for evening with black pants, heels and dressier accessories (statement earrings, necklaces, clutch, etc.).

10. Every lady needs a great fitting pair of skinny jeans, black ponte pants, and leggings.  Before you tell me that you aren’t skinny enough for this style of jean, let me plead my case. Skinny jeans have a slimmer leg which works well with all the longer tops that are out there right now. This is also true of leggings. (Just promise me that those leggings are not see through and are made of a heavier fabric.) The bonus with these slim leg styles is that any shoe can work with them. (Flats, heels, and boots are all game.) A black ponte knit pant is a staple that will take your day wardrobe to evening.  No business suit pants here. Just pure comfort and style!

Are all of these items in your wardrobe? If not, don’t fret.  Just check out my suggestions under each tip.  In no time, you will be the chicest mom on the block.  Thinking you need one-on-one help with your closet?
